Character Research

As my character for The Tempest has a life style very different from my own, I thought it would be important to have a clear understanding of the cultural and lifestyle differences between us.

This video gave me a brief insight into the life of someone living in Africa, although the documentary is on a different location it mentions itself in the video that many places are similar the main points and elements I discovered whilst watching that video is that many of the Africans work on the land
and that time there is measured by the passing season not by clocks or calenders  the life style is very different from mine, the currency they use is mace, and that there main hope is for a good harvest, there priorities seem to be there work and there family, the people interviewed all seemed to have happy family lives, having many children.

After watching the video above I more specifically researched The Life Style In Sierra Leone, this is a video i found when doing my research.

^ This video was not as direct at giving me information on the lifestyle  but i found I very interesting to watch it gave me and in-depth understanding of the surroundings and of the location to where our play is going to be set, the pictures and short video clips allowed you a quick glance into there lives. From both the sources i have looked at I believe that they are very hard working, working for there families and perhaps not having much of a lifestyle because of it, the second video showed you all different types of location they have there, there were clips of the beautiful beaches and landscapes as well as having clips of slightly less fortunate areas, look a bit run down in comparison to some of the other locations I have seen. These videos have also shown me the land where our tempest is  set, letting me see the surroundings and looking at the ground for example there isn't concrete there is sand and dusty flooring, If we could for our performance  I think it would be a great element to add and have in to the piece would be perhaps having some sand or dusty ground on the floor, allowing the setting to seem realer and true to the location.

This picture is the original drawing of the girls costume as The Lost, I am interested to see how the costumes will turn out in the actual performance and how easy they will be to move in, as the lost have to do allot of moving around and physical movement, I am glad we had our costumes measured as having long skirts might   be too long for some elements of the piece as our movements might be limited because of the length of the skirt, not having too many layers is also good for our costume as when doing items such as Body riffing having several layers of clothing would limit our movement as the layers may come off and move around allot during the movement sections. There are elements of the costume which show the slavery element to the piece such as the restraints around the ankles. The costume for all the other members for the cast fit the context , All the other members of the cast costumes, such as the lost's costumes are scruffy and torn, there costumes are very different to the Europeans, there costumes clearly show there "higher status".

My Monologue which i am going to say at the Beginning or the end of the show, as the other members of the lost say there's:

I am suck in this world which is strange to us all
The mesmerizing colours is summoning me
The want to escape is over powering my mind
The heat is draining my souls chance for survival, creating a land full of the dazed and blurred
There is something sturing in the air, i cannot walk anymore

With in my monologue it talks about being drugged and being under control by something My character has no say on, saying i do not belong in this land and i want to escape as  i do not like it, The drugs being used are controlling everybody leaving everyone confused and loosing there selves because of this, The i cannot walk anymore line is meaning literally not walking anymore and also not dealing with what is going on around me as a whole anymore."There is something sturing in the air" talking about the new Tempest between Ariel and Caliban that might be there.
