Historical Context

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon In Warwickshire  in 1564. Between around 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more. Many of these plays where very successful. In 1613, Shakespeare retired from the theatre and returned to Stratford-Upon-Avon. He died and was buried there in 1616.
The tempest was written in 1610, it is seen as Shakespeare last play. It was first performed in 1610.

  • One of Shakespeare's Relatives on his mothers side, William Arden, was arrested for plotting against Queen Elizabeth I, Imprisoned in the tower of London and executed.
  • Shakespeare's original grave marker showed him holding a bag of grain, Citizens of Stratford Replaced the bag with a Quill in 1747
The Original Play "The Tempest" is situated on a dusty island with dead tree's on stage, There is a rumor that Shakespeare based the play on the Bermuda Shipwreck, the source of this rumor is that Ships kept on crashing, and this could of been the reason why he wrote the play, In 1609 A Ship called " The sea venture"  which was an unusual vessel for time. Sea venture is even featured in The Coat of Arms of Bermuda.
